Aslan, my Golden Retriever

When it comes to me and dogs, it seems like everything takes a very long time.

First of all, it took a long time to get over the loss of my first dog named "Scruffy, the Rodent Of Unusual Size, Meister Muttley McGruff."

I waited a long time in college to get my degree and get out of the dorms so I could have a dog again.

Then I got married and had to work on convincing my wife that we needed to get a dog! Initially she used every conceivable reason in her arsenal to disarm my argument for getting a dog. She said that the dog would only be cute when it was a puppy. She said it wouldn't like her. She argued the toos while I argued the fors. She said it would be too messy, too ugly, and too much bothersome, but her prevailing argument always rested on too expensive.

Using a modus tollens argument, I asked her what breed she would accept if in a perfect world I could have a dog. After a little research, she said the temperment and look of a golden retriever would make it her top choice if she had to get a dog.

Through persistence and the resourcefulness of a good friend of mine, I was able to find a golden retriever puppy for only $25 from my good friend's sister. It looked as though her argument was weakening and I ultimately would have a companion pup at my heels again.

Naming him was a big job. His name had to have literary significance (I am a teacher), spiritual significance (I am a christian) and had to meet "his look." His golden fleece and lion-like walk gave way to Aslan, the name of C.S. Lewis' spiritual hero, the lion warrior king in the Lion, the Witch, and the wardrobe.

His first day at his new home.

Aslan and I are "best of buds."

Aslan with his favorite possession. He just loves running after tennis balls. Unfortunately, he doesn't always love releasing them! Named for his literary/spiritual counterpart in C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Aslan fits the part of the mighty Lion Warrior King outside his castle.
